You don’t need automotive-level production volume to justify automation. Modern systems feature fast changeovers, lower lead times, and pre-engineered hardware.

Machine Tending

If you are considering your first robotic machine-tending cell:

  • Keep it simple: Your primary benefit comes from keeping the machine “in-cycle,” not from making the robot perform dozens of complex side tasks.
  • Choose reliable equipment: Use machine tools that are in good condition. Older equipment with mechanical levers or manual gear shifters can be difficult to integrate.
  • Plan for flexibility: Modern grippers and saved software programs make it easy to introduce new parts to an existing cell with minimal setup time.

Automated Welding

With the shortage of certified welders reaching critical levels, robotic welding offers:

  • Productivity gains of 200% to 300% over manual welding.
  • Superior consistency in torch positioning, voltage, and weld size.
  • Shorter implementation times: Pre-engineered systems (such as FANUC and Productive Robotics systems) have drastically reduced lead times and costs.

Machine-Level Automation

Automation doesn’t always mean a standalone robotic arm. Maximizing the built-in capabilities of your existing machinery, such as adding a pallet pool (e.g., Haas EC400) or using touch probes for automated part and tool verification, can dramatically increase run time without operator intervention.
